The Value of Slip-On Walking Shoes

There are many people who have difficulty putting on their shoes (much less tying laces) for a wide range of reasons. These can include back problems, arthritis, obesity, dexterity issues, and many others (including laziness!). In the past, “slip-on” shoes were pretty much synonymous with “shoes without any support.” They were usually backless like slippers, which could increase the risk of falling.

These newer slip-on walking shoes have more of a structure like a conventional shoe, as well as the appearance that it’s been laced-up, with the added advantage of being able to put it on without having to bend down and use the hands.

What to Look for in Slip-On Walking Shoes

It’s impossible for these shoes to have as much support and stability as a conventional lace-up shoe because they’re simply not as “snug” on the foot. However, with the advances in materials of the shoe uppers that offer a sock-like fit, these new slip-on shoes do a pretty good job.

People should look for a shoe that fits their foot well without feeling like the foot is moving around inside once it’s on. They should look for a shoe that offers support and stability that rivals what a conventional shoe can offer.

How to Ensure Slip-On Shoes Stay On

The most important thing is that the heel counter of the shoe maintains its structure and holds the heel in place once the shoe is on the foot. If that part of the shoe is deforming too much while trying to put on the shoe, then eventually it will fail to return to its original shape, and the shoe will fail to serve its purpose.

In general, if the shoe fits properly, it will stay on. The biggest concern with these shoes is for people with very wide and/or swollen feet (which accounts for a large portion of our patient population who gravitate toward this shoe type). For these people, the slip-on shoes are more difficult to get on and off, so they are more likely to damage the shoes (especially the heel counter).

Q&A: Slip-On Walking Shoes

Q: Why are slip-on walking shoes a good option?
A: Slip-on shoes offer great convenience, especially for people with back problems, arthritis, obesity, or dexterity issues. They provide the look and structure of a conventional shoe without the need to bend down or tie laces.

Q: What should I look for in a slip-on walking shoe?
A: Look for a snug fit that doesn't allow your foot to move around inside the shoe. Also, check for good support and stability, particularly in the heel and midsole.

Q: How do I ensure slip-on shoes stay on?
A: The key is a well-structured heel counter that holds the foot securely. If the heel deforms while putting the shoe on, it can lose its shape and effectiveness over time.
