What is Qutenza?

It’s a new method for administering the medication capsaicin to the feet via patches that are applied in the doctor’s office. Capsaicin is a proven treatment for neuropathy pain, but with these new patches, it only has to be applied once every 3 months.

Does Qutenza cause any side effects?

Unlike other medications for neuropathy, there are no known systemic side effects. The treatment itself can cause a hot or burning sensation on the skin that should not last longer than 2 or 3 days. The doctor will talk to you about how to deal with this temporary sensation.

Is Qutenza covered by insurance?

Your doctor will get approval from your insurance before ordering the medication. In most cases, Qutenza is fully covered for the treatment of neuropathy. Depending on your insurance, the doctor will bill your insurance directly for the medication or it will be covered through your prescription benefits.

How does the treatment work?

Qutenza treatment is always performed in the doctor’s office. Patches infused with the medication are applied to the feet and left in place for 25 minutes while you relax in the treatment chair.

Is Qutenza treatment painful?

The treatment itself is not painful. You may feel a warm sensation while the patches are in place.

What happens after Qutenza treatment?

You may experience a hot sensation in your feet similar to a sunburn, which could last a few days. You can continue your daily activities as usual but might have to modify vigorous exercise until these symptoms subside.

How long does it take for Qutenza to help relieve neuropathy pain?

In most cases, a decrease in pain can be expected by the second treatment, but some people feel relief even after the first Qutenza treatment.
